Chennai Box Office Collections, Yudham Sei leads; Feb 04th - Feb 06th 2011

6. Ilaignan

Written by the Chief Minister, Ilaignan is an emotional account of a man fulfilling his responsibilities towards his parents. Pa. Vijay trudges along with a heavy duty role with Kushboo and Nasser performing the roles of his parents.

Trade Talk:
This full on emotional drama is finding takers among old timers.

Public Talk:
Namitha never forgets to mark attendance in Tamil cinema with her humungous presence in at least one movie every year.

No. Weeks Completed: 2
No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 24
Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 40%
Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs. 1,22,631
Total collections in Chennai: Rs. 18 Lakhs

5. Vada Poda Nanbargal

As the title suggests, Vada Poda Nanbargal is about two friends who are from very different backgrounds and an account of their lives. Starring many debutants, the movie is also directed by debut director Manigai.

Trade Talk:
Too early to predict trade results of a movie released only over the weekend with yet-to-be-known credentials.

Public Talk:
None heard, yet!

No. Days Completed: 3
No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 38
Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 50%
Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs. 2,93,594

4. Pathinaaru

After the lukewarm response for the offbeat Vaa Quarter Cutting, Mirchi Shiva is back with a love story, directed by D Sabapathy whose earlier credits include VIP and Punnagai Poove. The love story is not quite unseen but Sabapathy tries to breathe life into it by introducing many twists in the script.

Trade Talk:
Releasing over the weekend, the movie has had above average attendance recorded in theatres. Initial reviews were mix bag.

Public Talk:
Although, he’s the lead man there is very little of Shiva to be seen in the movie.

No. Days Completed: 3
No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 86
Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 65%
Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs. 8,26,015

3. Kaavalan

After the realization of the failure of ‘one-man fighting the odds of the society’ formula movies hitting hard, Vijay’s timing could not have been better in releasing Kavalan. Director Siddique maintains his humane touch in Kavalan rendering Vijay scope for performance. Asin is a pretty add on.

Trade Talk:
Slow and steady but with positive word of mouth, the movies collections are consistently retaining momentum.

Public Talk:
Vijay seems to be personally involved in the publicity and promotional activities of Kavalan.

No. Weeks Completed: 2
No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 216
Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 85%
Collection over this weekend in Chennai:Rs.36,90,759
Total collections in Chennai: Rs. 2.25 Crore

2.Aadukalam

Dhanush – Vetrimaaran team’s Aadukalam is quite an impressive account of lives that revolve around rooster fights and emotions that coat the sheer existence of people who are threatened with the success of their peers – betrayal, fear and ego. Dhanush and Jayabalan have come up with powerhouse performances scripted by Vetri’s mighty pen.

Trade Talk:
Trade pundits suggest that an analysis of the outcome of the movie’s collections provide a rosy picture, thanks to overwhelmingly positive reviews and word of mouth.

Public Talk:
G V Prakash proves his mettle with ‘Ayyayyo’ and ‘Yathe’ songs and Tapsee complements both the songs very well with her sparkle.

No. Weeks Completed: 2
No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 273
Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 78%
Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs. 40,84,848
Total collections in Chennai: Rs. 2.45 Crore

1. Siruthai

Karthi is in a dual role and Tamannah is in a dare-me-to-shed-some-clothes mode. Remake of Vikramarkudu, Siruthai raises more questions than entertaining since the director seems to have taken his cinematic liberties a bit too far.

Trade Talk:
Rural centers are providing respite for the movie, what with multiplexes registering a trend of slowdown in collections.

Public Talk:
Fun to watch Karthi shouldering the responsibilities of his roles with ease, nevertheless.

No. Weeks Completed: 2
No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 281
Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 82%
Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs. 49,33,789
Total collections in Chennai: Rs. 2.93 Crore

Other Source says (from Cine fundas) Kaavalan tops the charts compares to Siruthai & Aadukalam. [Thanks for the information Mr. Anonymous]

‘Kaavalan’ has gone ahead spinning more collections in box office when compared to the first week followed by ‘Aadukalam’ and ‘Siruthai. It looks like in spite of couple of movies ‘Pathinaaru’ and ‘Vaada Poda’ hitting screens, it wouldn’t have much effects as loads of releases are awaited from forthcoming weeks that includes Mysskin’s ‘Yuddham Sei’ and ‘Thoonga Nagaram’.
1. Kaavalan: Vijay proves to be a black horse again as he makes a strong comeback with his much suitable role of a soft romantic character. The film had a passable opening during first weekend as it released a day later after Pongal and lack of publicities. But, Vijay’s initiatives to promote the movie have drawn more family audiences to the theatres.
2. Aadukalam: The film had a grand reception during opening week due to advance booking plans, but the collections have gradually gone down as family audiences don’t prefer for this film. But the vigorous promotions are keeping the film at good status during weekend and holidays. Vetrimaaran deserves special mention for handling an unique theme on ‘Rooster-Fights’.
3. Siruthai: Remake of ‘Vikramakudu’ is doing mediocre business, but isn’t as best as Karthi’s previous movies. Critics have claimed this film to be a masala potboiler while it has worked some wonders in ‘C’ centres. Karthi has to choose some good scripts rather than trying to get down proving himself as a commercially successful actor.

4. Manmadhan Ambu:
Kamal Haasan’s turgidness over scripts and presentation makes it too hard for the ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres to perceive them accordingly. ‘Manmadhan Ambu’ is one such flick that has Kamal Haasan in a confused state of mind as he tries savoring to the tastes of both multiplex and single screen audiences. Udhayanidhi Stalin’s promotional campaigns haven’t worked wonders for him.

5. Easan:
Sasikumar’s directorial comes over the charts as the Pongal release ‘Ilaignan’ has become a blatant box office disaster. Hats off to Sasikumar for coming up with an engrossing script and a newfangled screenplay.

6. Mynaa:
The film is being re-released in few theatres and yet is witnessing the same results as the cohorts who missed the film are having glimpse over it again.

7. Ilaignan:
Outdated script is the major constraint for this film whereas Kalaingar Karunanidhi’s dialogues require special mention. Pa. Vijay really needs a crash course in acting as he is unable to emote furiously even to a single shot while taking on the baddies and uttering powerful dialogues.
