There will be total shutdown in Kollywood on Monday, January 7.

Various film bodies will be observing a token fast on that day, to protest against the 12.36 % service tax levied by the central government.


The industry had earlier gone on strike against service tax on February 23, 2012 but central government went ahead with it and new taxation came into effect from July 1, 2012.

Sarath Kumar, the Nadigar Sangam chief said : ” Though Service Tax has come into effect from July 1, 2012, we want to raise our voice now as the budget session is around the corner."

However theatres will not be closed on that day as per Paneerselvam, Secretary Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, as they are not effected by the tax.
