Happy being single, says Prabhu Dheva [Interview]

Bollywood kept me away from Kollywood: Prabhu Deva
Looks like director and choreographer Prabhu Dheva is enjoying his single status. At a press conference that took place recently in Chennai, the director was asked, ‘Are you happy being single?’ To this, the director nodded in reply and said, “Yeah.”

The inimitable king of dance and now ace Bollywood director, Prabhu Deva decided to meet the Chennai press after a long gap. Looking leaner and fitter, the dancer, actor and director was articulate and unlike his reclusive self. "Tamil industry is close to my heart and I love coming to Chennai. I would love to direct a film again here someday, but right now Bollywood projects are keeping me busy," he says.

The director, who is among the most sought after in Bollywood, after projects like Wanted, Rowdy Rathore and RRajkumar, is now busy with Action Jackson. With Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam and a newbie, in lead roles, only 10 per cent of the film is left to be completed. "We are proceeding to Austria for shooting a song on September 14. We want to release the film by November end or December," he says. The posters of the film showing a muscled Ajay Devgn have been out on the Internet. In January, he'll begin directing Singh Is Bling with Akshay Kumar. But that's not all that's keeping him busy. Prabhu Deva is also starring in ABCD 2, a dance film. He says, "The film includes energetic 18 to 21 year olds. I lost weight competing with them!" Agreeing that remakes are the flavour of the season, he says, "Filmmakers in Bollywood keep track of Southern hits. They are better informed than me!"

Sought after for his commercial magic, Prabhu Deva is rumoured to be the highest paid director in Bollywood. "If that was true, I'd be most happy!" he says with a grin. He is happy churning out masala hits that have made him a favourite among many. "I don't have the brains to make award-winning type of films. I'm happy doing commercial cinema," he says. Looks like no one is complaining. Ask him why Bollywood heroines sing his praises, he laughs modestly and says, "Maybe they like my dancing!"

Ruing the fact that Kalavaniya Pozhudhugal, in which he acted, is still unreleased after years, he's eager to choreograph for Tamil movies. "I'm open to choreographing for K Town directors if they call me. I told Shankar to call me for I but he didn't because he thought I was too busy in Bollywood," he says. Prabhu Deva seems to have put his tumultuous love life with Nayanthara behind him. "I'm happy being single," he says.
