Vikram-starrer "I" has surpassed the opening weekend (five days) collections of Vijay's "Kaththi" at the Chennai and the US box office.

"I" has earned ₹3.83 crore in its five-day long weekend, while "Kaththi" raked in ₹3.01 crore at the Chennai box office, reported. It is to be noted that "I" had more number of shows than Vijay's "Kaththi".

The romantic-thriller flick hit theatres on 14 January and took exceptional openings at the box office. Besides India, "I" has also done good business in key overseas markets. The Vikram-starrer has surpassed "Kaththi" collections in the United States and has emerged as the highest-grossing non-Rajinikanth, non-Kamal Haasan film.

"I" (Tamil version) had grossed $697,346 (₹4.30 crore) in its first weekend at the US box office. The film has beaten "Kaththi" collections, which amounted to $622,114 at the end of its fifth weekend.

The Vikram-starrer (including Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions) have surpassed the $1 million mark at the US and Canada box office. It needs to be seen if the Tamil version of the film alone will manage to cross the $1 million club.

The Vikram-starrer has grossed over ₹135 crore in five days at the worldwide box office. It is Vikram's first film to cross the ₹100 crore mark, while it is Shankar's third south film after "Robot" and "Shivaji" to achieve the feat.

The distributor share of "I" amounts to ₹71 crore and its worldwide theatricals are valued at over ₹125 crore, reported Andhraboxoffice. The Shankar directorial has a long way to emerge as a hit venture. The film needs to continue its strong run worldwide for at least a few more weeks to register good collections at the box office.

It has fetched mixed reviews from the critics and this might affect its collections in the coming days. Moreover, the release of new films might reduce its screen count and in turn affect its business.
