The Padma Awards for Film Personalities!
On the occasion of the Republic Day of India, the Union Government announced the coveted civilian awards – the Padma awards – for people who have excelled in their respective fields. This year, 108 people have been selected for this honour and notable among them from the cine field are D Rama Naidu, Sri Devi, S Janaki, Nana Patekar and others.

Here is the complete list of awardees:

Padma Bhushan

S Janaki – the renowned playback singer has over 20,000 songs to her credit thus far having sung in various languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. Janaki is fondly known as The Nightingale of the South.

D Rama Naidu – the ace producer has been producing films in various Indian languages for the past five decades and has even made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for producing the most number of films.

Rajesh Khanna (Posthumous) – the legendary actor Rajesh Khanna has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan posthumously for his yeoman service to the film industry. He was the Superstar of the Bollywood having starred in 163 feature and 17 short films in his long and successful career.

Sharmila Tagore – she is an actress par excellence having entered the film industry with Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film Apur Sansar in 1959. Sharmila has headed the Indian Film Censor Board from 2004 to 2011. She is also the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005 and is associated with a number of social causes.Jaspal Bhatti (Posthumous) – Indian television personality, actor and singer Jaspal Singh Bhatti has been awarded with the Padma Bhushan posthumously. He is well-known for his television comedy show Flop Show, which was aired by the Doordarshan in the 1980s and 90s.

Padma Shri

Sri Devi – the evergreen actress, who made a comeback with English Vinglish, has been chosen for the Padma Shri award. Sri Devi entered the film industry as a child artiste and has shared the screen space with MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Anil Kapoor, and almost all the leading stars in the Indian film industry during her heydays.
Madhu alias Madhavan Nair – this actor from Mollywood was a leading star in the film industry having starred in films during the 1960s and 70s. He has also directed and produced a number of films.

Ramesh Sippy – he is a popular director with films like Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta and Andaz to this credit. He has also produced several blockbusters including Dum Maaro Dum, Chandni Chowk to China, Taxi No. 9211 and bluffmaster.

Nana Patekar – the veteran actor has been chosen for the Padma Shri award for his excellent acting skills. He has won three National awards and a number of FilmFare awards in his long career thereby proving his versatility.

The awardees will be honoured by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee with the awards at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on the Republic Day.
