Enabling ‘Raavanan’ and its Hindi version ‘Raavan’ to have a free run in Karnataka, the Competition Commission on India(CCI) has passed an order restraining Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) from preventing any exhibitor from screening the film.
The order passed late on Thursday in favour of Reliance Big Pictures, who had produced the Mani Ratnam film along with Madras Talkies, will be in effect till June 22 when the KFCC will submit its version before the Commission.
Big Pictures knocked the doors of the CCI after KFCC refused to allow them a larger release of the film in Karnataka (24 theatres in Mysore circuit alone). The distributor had pleaded that they needed more number of theatres as the film was releasing in two languages.
“The entire entertainment industry in my view should not be subjected to any kind of restriction, more so on the eve of the release of the film. I believe competition law is evolving and this is the big step in that direction,” a Big Pictures higher official was quoted as saying.
