Frank words from Illayaraja

Illayaraja has got his fourth national award for his music. Only this time it is for a new category Background score. The magnum opus 'Pazhassi Raja' has got him recognition in the difficult art of background score.

Speaking to the media Illayaraja was frank and blunt. Illayaraja said he takes the award as recognition to good music. He said he is not a labourer who works only for money. He thanked the director Hariharan and producer Praveen for giving him everything wanted for the music.

Illayaraja also praised the director Hariharan for the magnificent film that gave an opportunity to score good music. He also revealed Hariharan did not accept a single award for 'Pazhassi Raja' from Kerala saying they did not recognize the music of Illayaraja.

When the producer and director went to Illayaraja for the music of 'Pazhassi Raja', the maestro threw a googly at them. He insisted that he needs Symphony orchestra only for the film. Considering the cost factor the producer was reluctant but finally gave in to the maestro's request. In the end when they saw the final film with music they were awe struck and felt the maestro is worth his every demand.

Illayaraja also requested the media persons not to use the word "composer" for anyone who plays an instrument. He asked them to use the word judiciously for the right person at the right place only. He also said that today technology has taken the soul out of genuine music.
