She was introduced by director Seeman in films with her debut film ‘Iniyavale’, and there was no looking back after she started writing lyrics for ace directors like Gautham Menon, Bala, A R Murugadoss, Priya and Sasikumar and music directors A R Rahman, Harris Jayaraj and Yuvan Shankar Raja. ‘Vaseegara…’ from the film ‘Minnale’ shot her to big fame.

It is said that now Thamarai is the highly paid lyriscist in Tamil cinema. It is reported, though the exact amount is not known, the lyricist gets more than what poet Vaali and Vairamuthu get for a song now.

Thamarai, who has been raising her voice for the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils, is a natural lover of Tamil language and people and also follows it in her personal life. She writes only for Tamil films and only in pure Tamil without the use of English language in it. She has put her son, named Samaran, in a Tamil medium school and also teaches him the habit of Tamil culture and tradition.
