The birth of Aishwarya Rai's daughter last week made front page headlines all over the world. Aishwarya isn't just India's bi...
What is surprising is the amount of money being offered for the privilege.
Americans are all too familiar with these glossy magazine baby pictures. A smiling celebrity, often with her husband or boyfriend, holding her newborn in a sweet pose as a (usually pink) headline declares: "See the very first pictures of the baby!"
Celebrities leverage these photo shoots for big paychecks, often upwards of a million dollars. Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears, and Kourtney Kardashian have all done big time covers with their children. Jessica Simpson is shopping around baby picture deals these days, with a steep asking price.
Aishwarya Rai is just as big a celebrity as any of these women (even bigger if you ask anyone outside the United States). It seems a given that should she be willing to pose with Beti B for a magazine, she would be raking in big bucks.
So what's the price tag for Aishwarya Rai baby photos?
A shocking $30,000! And that's the upper range!
Western media are offering ten to twenty lakhs Rupees, which is roughly $20,000-$30,000, for photos of Aishwarya Rai's daughter. These are the same people who are willing to offer a million dollars for Jessica Simpson's baby photos—and let's be honest, no one really cares about Jessica Simpson's baby.
So why such a low figure? Do these magazines actually think the Bachchans will be impressed by such a pathetic amount of money? Is the western media trying to take advantage of the Bachchans because they're Indian?
The reason will hardly matter—Amitabh Bachchan has already made it very clear that his granddaughter will not be appearing in any magazines, and Aishwarya Rai is far too classy to do anything so cheap as to pose with her child on a tabloid cover.
