The competition was heavy as 'Aadukalam' had to run the race along with some of the best movies of 2011. But the Madurai-based film emerged triumphant.
'Vaagai Sooda Vaa' bagged the second prize, while 'Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai' won the jury special award.
Kathiresan and Vetri Maaran, the producer and director of 'Aadukalam' respectively, were presented with a cash prize of Rs one lakh and Rs two lakh, respectively, while Muruganandam and Sargunam, the producer and director of 'Vaagai Sooda Vaa' respectively, were give Rs one lakh each.
Su Venkatesh, who bagged the Sahitya Akademi award, was honoured with Rs one lakh. Among those who took part in the function were South Indian Actors Association president R Sarath Kumar, directors Ameer, S P Jananathan, R Parthiban and producer T Siva.
