The film which has a rural backdrop and has Shree playing a boy chosen to be a kodangi, was not a cakewalk for the hero.
Speaking about it he says, "Coming from a city background it was naturally tough for me to get into the character. But I spent two months before the shoot in the areas around Madurai to observe people and their body language there."
The film required him to get into a frenzy for the role of the kodangi apart from several realistic fight scenes.
"It was director Jeevan who trained me and even helped me get the Madurai slang right since he hails from the region." He is all praise for heroine Shammu, "She is US bred but still adapted beautifully to the role of a village girl."
Mayilu is directed by Jeevan, brother of Sukumaran, cameraman of films like Mynaa and Kumki.
