After protesting against Khushboo for her sari depicting Hindu Gods, the Hindu Munnani party is now targeting Trisha for “trying to promote a drinking habit among women”.
The party has threatened to disrupt the star’s shootings even in Hyderabad, if she doesn’t apologise.

The actor had said during a press conference that directors seemed to like shooting “drinking scenes” with her as it apparently translated to box office magic and hits like Mankatha vouched for it. “May be it’s like a sentiment for filmmakers,” she had reportedly said.

Taking offence to the drinking reference, the Hindu Munnani party wrote to her asking her to withdraw her comments or face the ire of Hindu activists. “Giving the excuse of a success formula and indulging in drinking scenes is nothing but encouraging the bad habit among women, so Trisha should tender an unconditional apology” says Kannan, a top office-bearer of Hindu Munnani. “Hindu culture doesn’t allow women to drink alcohol.

So any attempt to encourage it is unacceptable,” he adds.

Giving the example of superstar Rajnikanth who has been seen smoking on-screen, but is hosting a campaign against smoking and discourages the harmful habit off-screen, he says, “Top celebrities should follow Rajnikanth who differentiates between reel and real-life deeds. Whereas, Trisha is yet to denounce her on-screen acts in public and is sending out wrong signals.”

If she did not apologise, he said that as a sign of protest, they would send her a bottle of whisky and a book detailing the harmful effects of drinking. “It’s a sign of protest and she would be receiving such parcels from 20-odd districts,” he adds. A source close to Trisha, however, clarifies: “They have taken her quote out of context and are blowing it out of proportion to gain cheap publicity; she understands Hindu traditions. In fact, she has thumbed down many endorsements of harmful brands till date since she knows the responsibilities of a celebrity and the impact they could have on society. There’s no need for anyone to teach her values.”
