AR Rahman’s son to croon in Mani Ratnam’s next

Double Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman Friday said that his son Ameen might sing in filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s yet-untitled upcoming bilingual project. Ameen, 12, has already crooned the song ‘NaNa’ from ‘Couple’s Retreat’.

At a recent event, A.R. Rahman revealed that his son, Ameen, may make his Tamil debut as a singer in ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s next film. The proud father announced, “Ameen is studying in school. He has even been getting acting offers. He may sing in Mani Ratnam’s upcoming flick.”It is common knowledge that Rahman shares a great bond with his mentor and composes for his films. Though speculations on Mani’s next film have been running high for the last few months and the maverick filmmaker is yet to announce it officially, Rahman’s words make it clear that something is in the offing.

Ameen has already sung a song in the Hollywood film, Couples’ Retreat, whose original soundtrack and songs were composed by ARR, but this will be his first experience of singing for a Tamil film. Eleven-year-old Ameen had his stage debut at the opening ceremony of the 10th Chennai International Film Festival in the city last year, when he performed a short medley on the piano from Mani Ratnam’s Roja to a full house. He then made his second stage appearance and enthralled the select gathering with his Sufi ensemble at the unveiling of the new campus for KM College of Music and Technology.

In an earlier interview, Rahman had said, “As a father, I feel whatever they learn has to be holistic and in-depth and they have to be very passionate about it.”

“A lot of filmmakers want Ameen to act, but I want him to concentrate on studying. He might sing in Mani Ratnam’s next film,” Rahman said at an event.

He was talking about his upcoming concert on Oct 2 for a Tamil news channel. Rahman will perform 50 Tamil songs at the concert, for which he’s been preparing for nearly two months. The Mozart of Madras will be accompanied by students from his music college KM Conservatory along with singers such as Blaaze and Karthik at the concert.
