The deadly Thupakki combo of Vijay-AR Murgadoss also helped the film to take a super opening. The team coming together again and raging controversies surrounding the film helped it to make it a brand.

In Tamil Nadu the film has worked wonders due to the pre-release controversy and uncertainty regarding its release. This created an unprecedented hype around the film, with everybody keen to catch it first day first show. Early morning shows at unearthly 4.30 am went packed, and WOM also worked to films advantage.

Monster Opening

Kaththi has taken a monster opening at the India domestic box-office on Diwali day – Oct 22. In Tamil Nadu, the film has created history by collecting approximately Rs 12.5 Crore from 455 plus screens with multiple shows and tax free!

Ayngaran International whose name now appears as the producers (in TN & Pondy) of the film has Tweeted – “ We are extremely happy to announce that our movie has received the biggest opening for a Tamil movie”

The film has netted around Rs 1.65 Cr from Kerala and approximately Rs 1.55 Cr from Karnataka. It means a total net of around Rs 15.7 Crore from three southern states where it released. The Telugu version of Kaththi is releasing only next week in Andhra.

Kaththi opening clearly indicates that there is a huge market for Tamil biggies, and it is growing as the market expands. This has been achieved mainly due to carpet bombing with maximum screens in all the markets.

Bangalore had 65 screens on October 22 playing the Vijay starrer. In Thiruvananthapuram, Kaththi opened in six screens, something which no Malayalam film has done before. In Palakkad where it released in three screens, the film grossed Rs 6.35 lakhs on first day.

Tamil Nadu

"Kaththi," which hit the screens on 22 October, has taken record opening in Tamil Nadu. "#Kaththi takes extraordinary opening on day 1 in TN. Trade very happy as all shows full, wide release & tax free," tweeted entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai.

The film has minted approximately ₹12.5 crore nett on the opening day at the Tamil Nadu box office.

It has easily surpassed the opening day collections of Ajith's "Veeram" and Vijay's "Jilla," which amount to ₹5 crore nett.

The Vijay starrer has reportedly got the best-ever opening for a Tamil film in the Trichy-Tanjore areas, according to reports. The film has also taken phenomenal openings in Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Madurai.

"Kaththi" witnessed full shows in most theatres on the special occasion of Diwali. The film released with a clean "U" rating and has got an exemption from paying entertainment tax. This has ensured that the Vijay starrer registers fantastic collections at the box office.

The five-day-long weekend is likely to boost the film's collections in its first week.

United States

The film has reportedly created an all time record for a non-Rajinikanth film in the US. "Kaththi" has set new benchmarks in the US during its premiere shows.

The Vijay starrer has earned $1,42,805 from the US premiere shows, which is a record for a non-Rajini film. Other than Rajinikanth's "Endhiran" and Vijay's "Kaththi," no other Tamil film has fetched over $1,00,000 from premiere shows.

The film is expected to continue its grand business in the US as the Vijay starrer has received positive reviews from the critics. If the overall gross of "Kaththi" crosses $4,00,000 in the US, it will be the first non-Rajinikanth and non-Kamal Haasan film to achieve the feat.

Currently, the top five grossers in the US are "Kochadaiiyaan," "Endhiran," "Vishwaroopam", "Dasavatharam" and "Sivaji."

Kerala

"Kaththi," which was released in over 200 screens in Kerala, has taken fantastic openings in the state. Vijay's films have a good market in Kerala and "Kaththi" has also followed suit. The film has minted ₹1.75 crore nett in Kerala, but has failed to surpassed Vijay's "Jilla" first day collections, which amounted to ₹1.95 crore.

Karnataka

"Kaththi" opened in 102 screens in Karnataka and took big openings in the state. Vijay has got his career's best opening in Karnataka. It has fetched approximately ₹1.5 crore nett in the state, according to Andhraboxoffice.

"#Foxstar carpet bombing #Kaththi in Karnataka in 102 screens, taken a humongous opening. It opens up the market 4 big Tamil movies," tweeted Sreedhar Pillai.

"Kaththi" first day collections from India will amount to approximately ₹16 crore.
