Film actor and Naadalum Makkal Katchi leader Karthik met Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief E V K S Elangovan at the party headquarters (Satyamurthi Bhavan) in Chennai on Wednesday.

Former MLA H Vasanthamar and a few other party leaders were present when Karthik met Elangovan.

Though Elangovan announced that Karthik had joined the party after disbanding his Naadalum Makkal Katchi, there was no clear message from the actor.

On his arrival at Satyamurthi Bhavan, Karthik told reporters that he had come to extent his support to the Congress. However, after his meeting with Elangovan, Karthik told reporters that he would take a decision on joining the party later.

Karthik entered politics a few months before the 2006 assembly elections. He started his political career with the All India Forward Block (AIFB). He was appointed AIFB's state unit secretary.

Karthik launched the Naadalum Makkal Katchi in 2009. His party had extended its support to the Congress during the recent Lok Sabha elections.

The state unit of the Congress is facing a crisis after former Union minister G K Vasan quit the party a few days ago to float a new party. Elangovan, who took over as the TNCC chief on Sunday in the wake of the resignation of Vasan loyalist B S Gnanadesikan from the post, apparently wants to rejuvenate the party. His meeting with Karthik and other leaders of other local parties is seen as a step in this direction.
