Suriya signs deal with Amazon Prime Video, irks theatre owners

Coronavirus has locked down the entire nation and most countried in the world. This has resulted in the closure of all theaters, the cancellation of the shooting and release schedules of the movies which were about to hit silver screens.

With this situation, individuals are moving to advanced stages - digital platform. Rather than releasing the astral movie in theaters, Jyotika-starrer 'Ponmagal Vandhal' is preparing for direct digital release.

Ponmagal Vandhal, produced by Suriya's 2D Entertainment, might skip theatrical release and arrive directly on streaming platform. It is said that the streaming rights of the feature film has been bagged by Amazon Prime Video and Ponmagal Vandhal will be available on the platform from the 1st week of May. However, no official announcement has been made at this point from production house.

Theatre owners have strongly reacted to this development. The general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, R Pannerselvam, condemned the reports and said films made for theatrical release must not directly release on OTTs.

Pannerselvam claimed that the film's producer, when contacted, refused to change the decision. Following this, he has announced that their association won't release any films by the production house and the companies involved with them. "They can release all their films on OTTs. Our theaters don't need their films," he has said.
