Sivakarthikeyan’s 'Hero' plagiarism case: Court lifts ban

Hero Movie Amazon Prime
Actor Sivakarthikeyan delivered back to back hits with films 'Namma Veettu Pillai', and 'Hero'. Released on December last year, 'Hero' was a superhero film, directed by PS Mithran, received mixed reviews from the audience. Later the film is dubbed in Telugu version as 'Sakthi' was released before the coronavirus outbreaks.

'Hero' was made avaialbe on Prime Video and scheduled to telecast on SUN TV for May 1. But the movie after avaialble for a brief period of time, has been removed from streaming platform. The court reportedly gave a judgment in favour of Bosco Prabhu who claimed 'Hero' as his story. Also, the court has reportedly banned the film to be aired on television and OTT platforms.

Bosco Prabhu who is currently working as an assistant director for Atlee, has alleged that his story was stolen by the makers of 'Hero' to the writers association. After brief inquiry, Bhagyaraj has declared that the story belongs to Prabhu and 'Hero' stories are similar. “All of them stated that both of your stories are similar. As I had the same opinion I asked Mithran to my office. “A Fraud hero – A sister who involved in research- A Villain who betrays her in the name of getting her the copyrights for her product- Sister’s Arrest- returning through train after release- Suicide- A reformed hero – Avenging the villain are similar in both the stories.” read the press release of Bhagyaraj at that time.

However, Mithran, the director of the film, remained firm in his stand and refused to give any monetary compensation, saying that he and his co-writers Pon Parthiban, Savari Muthu, and Antony Bhagyaraj wrote the story based on real-life incidents from newspapers and he had proper evidence to prove that their work was authentic.

The latest is that the court has suspended the interim order issued for the removal of the film from the OTT platform. The 2-judge bench has asked the producer, Kotapadi J Rajesh of KJR Studios, to deposit a sum of Rs. 10 lakhs and give accounts for the income from Amazon Prime in a sealed cover.

This comes as a result of director PS Mithran filing an appeal against a single judge order restraining the streaming of the film on OTT platforms. This plagiarism case is going on since December 2019 and will next be heard on June 3, 2020.

After fighting back on this case and clearing the issues, the team is now set to release the film back on OTT platforms for fans to enjoy. Sun TV and Amazon Prime who bought the rights of the film for 21 crores and 12 crores respectively, can telecast and stream it online.

Hero is an action-thriller that speaks of the business of education and the destruction of intellectual property. It saw Sivakarthikeyan playing the role of a superhero with Kalyani Priyadarshan, Arjun Sarja, Naachiyaar fame Ivana, Robo Shankar, and Abhay Deol in important roles.
