Danny (2020) - Tamil Movie Review
With the coronavirus pandemic pushing theatres to stay locked, several films have been opting for a digital release. 'Danny', starring Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, is the latest to join the list. The film gets a digital release on the streaming platform ZEE5.

Helmed by LC Santhanamoorthy, 'Danny' will feature Varalaxmi as a gritty cop who is investigating a murder. The film also stars Sayaji Shinde, Vela Ramamoorthy, Anitha Sampath, and Ramar.

Storyline

'Danny' starts off with a mysterious murder of a young girl that takes place in the paddy fields of Thanjavur. After this particular murder night, we are introduced to the dog named Danny that is owned by Vela Ramamoorthy and the police department. This intelligent dog never fails to impress and always solves the crime. Enter Varalaxmi (Kunthavai), a police officer who takes over this case.

The entire public and news media casts suspicion on the husband, and he is arrested. But Kundhavai believes there is more to the story and follows other leads.

On the parallel, we see Danny nab suspects and basically being scent master supreme! Danny is brought in to help with the murder investigation. Kundhavai goes off on a tangent chasing the suspects, but tragedy hits home and this sets her on a collision course with the men responsible for the murders. Cue the climax.

Even the cutest canine can’t keep afloat this crime drama. Danny could have been a decent entertainer, but is undone by a cluttered screenplay and lazy writing.

‘Danny’ has its own highs and lows, but the flat screenplay makes it an average watch in spite of Varalaxmi's good performance.
2/5 ()
Varalaxmi's Danny is doggedly dull. The film is a masterclass in bad writing.
1.5/5 M Suganth ()
A cold trail. The writing is so lazy that dialogues contradict themselves all the time.
