Friday Fiesta 16th July 2010

This Friday is going to be another low profile Friday with only four straight films and two Hollywood dubbed movies releasing. The four strait Tamil releases is a cause for concern as two of them are perceived as soft adult movies.
Priyanka Art Productions 'Pollachi Maaple' is releasing on Friday after sleeping in the cans for quite sometime. It is produced by Mangai Harirajan and directed by R. Latchumanan. Music is by Deva. The film heavily banks on the Sathyaraj-Goundamanai combo which has rocked in many films before. Considering the main cast the film is expected to be a full comedy with usual “lollu” of Sathyaraj and Goundamani. Manivannan also plays an important role. Female supports are Susan and Abinayasree. There is not much talk as the film’s release was uninformed and announced only few days back. Publicity is also not seen much anywhere.
Gopika International 'Virunthali' is a village love story. It introduces new face Ishvar as the hero. 'Aval Peyar Thamizharasi' Dhyana, Nasser, Bala Singh, Singam Puli, Cheran Raj, Gopika Rajesh are other important actors. The film is produced by Rajesh Gopinath and directed by Whaterman who was an associate director with the famous Lohita Das. Music is by S S Kumaran. Even 'Virunthali' was long due and finally reaching the theatres this Friday. No big expectations are there from this film but it has got decent theatres in the city.
'Devaleelai' is from the man who was the surprise winner of 2009 with his soft adult movie ‘Kadhal Kadhai’. Having tasted success once Velu Prabhakaran did not want to deviate from his formula.  The publicity and the public talk have been cleverly managed to give an impression that this movie is also as sleazy as his 'Kadhal Kadhai'.
Leo International ‘Andharangam’ is another film written and directed by JV Rukmangathan who believes in by titillating the senses you can make money. With a tag line The Hidden Truth this film wants to border decency which may be difficult to achieve. Sindhu who played the minor character as the sex worker who marries a dwarf man to lead a normal life in 'Angadi Theru' plays a major slimy role claims the latest publicity materials. The sudden surge of these kind of low grade movies is a cause for concern to real movie fans.
As usual a couple of Hollywood dubbed movies is also going to speak Tamil this Friday. The fantasy adventure film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Jon Turteltaub 'Sorcerer’s Apprentice' is being released as 'Marma Valayam'. The film stars Nicolas Cage in the lead.
The story of 'Marma Valayam' is about a sorcerer in modern Manhattan city who tries to defend the city from his arch enemies.  When he could not do it alone he apprentices two and unwillingly teaches his art and science of magic to stop the forces of darkness. The film which was set be released on the same date as in India, July 16 in international markets released two days earlier on July 14.
'Kanavu Vettai' is the Tamil version of the sci-fi psychological action thriller film 'Inception' written, produced and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film stars the Titanic star Leonardo Di Caprio. Leonardo is absolutely skilled in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious mind during the dream state. His rare ability takes him to corporate espionage. When he wanted to come out of this ugly submergence he sees new enemies coming. That's the interesting story of 'Kanavu Vettai'. It is released in Tamil by Thenandal Films of Rama Narayanan who made unbelievable profits with dubbed movies like Telugu 'Arundathiee' and Hollywood '2012' in 2009. He is also the one who released 'Ulaga Nayagan' last week.
There were also three other movies Aaravathu Vanam, Ilakkana Pizhai and Singamugam were expected to release this Friday as per their media materials. But for 'Singamugan' that is pushed to July 23 there is no news about the other two.
