Veteran villain/character actor Ponnambalam, who was rumoured to be toying with the ideal of joining actor-turned-politician Vijaykanth’s DMDK some time back, formally joined the AIADMK yesterday in the presence of AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa. Pop singer Ceylone Manohar and a host of others joined him into the AIADMK fold.

As many as 9000 activists joined AIADMK, widely tipped to have everything going for to upset DMK’s applecart in the ensuing Assembly elections. Popularly known as ‘Suraangani’ Manohar, the Sri Lanka-based pop singer is quite a famous personality in the music circles and among youth who love his ‘gaana’ songs. He has also starred in some Tamil and Hindi movies.

Besides Ponnambalam and Manohar, others who aligned themselves with AIADMK include film editor Anil Malnad, an ex-bureaucrat of the Tamil Nadu Government (Ilango), editor Kadhirvel of the journal ‘Sooriyakathir’ and many others. Welcoming them warmly in to the party, the former chief minister urged them to work hard to rid the State from the ‘clutches’ of the DMK combine.

“Each of you should ensure that you take at least 10 persons along with you when you go to cast your vote,” she urged.
