Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has issued license to Kalaignar TV group owned by Karunanidhi family for new channels. Apparently, anticipating that MIB can soon cancel the license of Kalaignar TV because of involvement of its shareholders Kanimozhi and MD Sharad Kumar in the 2G scam, the group opted for licence for new channels. The new channels will operate under the brand name ‘Murasu’.

Reportedly, the new channel will be launched once the ministry of information and broadcasting cancels the license of Kalaignar TV and it goes off air. The management is likely to launch one news channel and one entertainment channel.

For the record, Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar, who each have 20 per cent stake in Kalaignar TV, were named by the CBI as co-conspirators in the 2G spectrum scam after it traced an illegal money transfer of Rs 200 crore between the real estate firm DB Realty and Kalaignar TV. Both were arrested by CBI on May 20, 2011.
