Sun Pictures COO Hansraj Saxena was granted bail on Thursday in one of the cheating cases for which he was arrested on July 3, but he will continue to be in prison as there are two more cases pending against him. Police sources said Saxena might be slapped with a fourth case, on a complaint that he had cheated a film producer after buying the rights of 68 MGR movies.
Principal sessions judge P Devadass granted Saxena bail in the T Selvaraj cheating case on the conditions that he would have to execute a bond for Rs 10,000, furnish two sureties, remain in Madurai and appear before Thalakulam police station every morning at 10.30 am. Film distributor Shanmugavelu of Salem had filed a case against Saxena alleging that he was made to forcibly part with Rs 45 lakh for the distribution of 'Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai'.
A third case was filed against him by film producer Nemichand Jhabak, who produced the movie 'Mappillai' starring Dhanush and Hansika Motwani. He had sold the film's rights to Sun Pictures for Rs 17 crore in 2010. Sun Pictures paid him the money but subsequently Saxena threatened Jhabak and made him return a portion of it. Sun Pictures allegedly forced him to return Rs 3.37 crore saying the film did not do as well as expected in the state.
Jhabak has now told the police that Saxena also cheated him while buying the movie rights of 68 MGR movies. Police officials said this would be considered as a fresh case saxena. The city police on Thursday approached the Saidapet Magistrate Court and sought five-day police custody of Saxena in the cheating case registered by the Kodambakkam police on July 11, based on Jhabak's complaint.
Police said Jhabak was holding the rights of 68 pictures starring MGR. "Saxena approached Jhabak a few years ago after knowing the rights of the exclusive MGR films and struck a deal. As per the deal, Saxena promised to provide two prime slots in the evening for Jhabak to telecast two serials on Sun TV. He asked Jhabak to sell the rights of 68 MGR movies. As Jhabak was interested in the small screen, he sold the rights to Sun," a police officer said.
Jhabak had sold the film's rights of 'Mappillai', starring Dhanush and Hansika Motwani, to Sun Pictures for Rs 17 crore in 2010.
