Sources say that the Censor Board officials threatened to certify 3 with a A certificate if some objectionable scenes were not chopped off.
The film comprised of some very steamy scenes between Dhanush and Shruti Haasan and the Censor Officials wanted these scenes to be cut down if Aishwarya Dhanush was set on having a U certificate.

Since a U certificate would mean entertainment tax sops, the director decided to scissor down those scenes. Following this, 3 has been awarded with a U certificate, say inside sources.
