Popular Carnatic vocalist and granddaughter of DK Pattamal, Nithyashree Mahadevan’s husband commit suicide by jumping in to the Adyar River yesterday afternoon around 2 pm.

Police reports suggest that, Mahadevan's body was taken from the river and sent for autopsy to the Chennai’s Government Royapettah and further investigations are on.

Some reports also suggest that shocked on hearing her husband’s suicide singer Nithyashree too attempted suicide.

The reason for his death is not yet known. We hear that he came to the bridge in Adayar driving his white Honda city.

A policemen at the scene informs, "He apparently asked the driver to stop the car and stepped out, talking on his mobile phone. People who saw him jump off the bridge in to the river called the fire and rescue service."

When the ambulance took him to the hospital, the doctors declared him dead. The couple is survived by two daughters. Friends and family has been visiting the house ever since the news broke.

Nithyasree, who has been performing at various sabhas this year, was to give a performance today evening at the Rama Rao Kalyana Mantap as part of the Margazhi festival. This sure comes as a shock to the family.
