Vishwaroopam ban lifted, plans to release this week

Vishwaroopam ban lifted, plans for Feb 8th Release
With the Tamil Nadu government on Sunday lifting the fortnight-long ban on “Vishwaroopam,” the movie is likely to hit the theatres across the state from  coming Friday and the litigation in Madras High Court is also expected to end as Kamal Haasan is likely to withdraw his petition against the ban.

Following the settlement made on Saturday night during a meeting of Kamal Hassan and the Muslim organisations which protested against the movie, district collectors in state have revoked the prohibition orders on the film imposed under Section 144 of the CrPC, sources said on Sunday evening.

The district police chiefs are learnt to have recommended to the respective district collectors that the ban on the movie can be lifted following the settlement according to which Kamal Hassan agreed to make some changes in the movie. The Muslim groups have also announced withdrawal of their agitations.

Mr. George told that “we have assessed the situation. As the two parties have arrived at an understanding, we are sure that there will not be any agitation. Hence we have revoked the ban.”

The film would get fresh certification from the Central Borad of Film Certification’s regional office in Chennai, after Raj Kamal Films submits the list of modifications made to the film.

Kamal Hassan has agreed to seven cuts, mostly those which came with “audio clippings” of verses from the Holy Quran. Meanwhile, when the case on the film comes up in the Madras High Court on Monday, Kamal Hassan is expected to inform the court that he is withdrawing the petition.

However, the controversy over “Vishwaroopam,” slated to be released on January 25, has affected many others. Most of the 524 theatre owners who booked the flick have taken up Mani Ratnam’s “Kadal” and Bejoy Nambiarr’s “David,” which were released on February 1.  But the theatre owners booked the new films only for a week in anticipation that the ban on “Vishwaroopam” will be lifted soon
