2013- Kollywood’s half-yearly report card

Kollywood
There has been 80 straight Tamil releases in 2013 from January 1 to June 30. At the box-office the films that are profitable is Kanna Laddu Thinna Asaiya (KLTA), Ethir Neechal, Vishwaroopam, Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru (TVSK), Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga (KBKR), Soodhu Kavvum, Udhayam NH 4, Chennaiyil Oru Naal and Kutti Puli.

9 out of the 80 odd films are profitable, with a hit ratio of 11%. It is a decent record in an industry where hit percentage is normally in single digit. KLTA and Ethir Neechal are the most profitable of the 9 releases, based on Return on Investment (ROI). Both these films have collected their cost of production from theatricals (92 % from Tamil Nadu theatricals + India domestic) alone.

The rest of the films have made profit taking into consideration their satellite television acquisition costs, overseas theatrical and other rights including dubbing/remake rights.

The trend is clear that films made on a budget of around Rs 5- 6 Crore are the most profitable. The return on investment is the highest in this category. Another clear indicator is that films certified with U certificate and eligible for entertainment tax concession are turning out to be the winners.
