Now, Kollywood singers join hands for royalty

We had recently reported that singers in Mumbai have formed the Indian Singers’ Rights Association (ISRA), in order to ensure that playback singers get their due in terms of royalty from the songs they’ve performed. And now, Tamil singers too seem to have joined this effort. This body will function in the same way as the IPRS (which looks after composers and lyricists), collecting royalty for songs.

All leading singers in Kollywood are getting together today in a bid to understand their rights, post the recent amendment in the copyright law that entails them to get a share in royalties as well. While leading singers from Bollywood held an event last month to showcase their unity, singers in Tamil cinema too have joined the bandwagon now.

A source says, “All singers in Kollywood, right from the likes of SPB and Yesudas to the younger generation singers, are looking forward to get together and understand how it works. Hariharan is flying to Chennai especially for the function.”
