Analysis

After a pitched battle for control over the all-powerful Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC), Kalaipuli S Thanu and company came up trumps. In the election presided over by the court appointed former high court judge A K Rajan, Thanu won the president’s seat by a rousing 565/770 margin. Most of the members of his faction also managed to secure key posts.

A clearly relieved Thanu, said that he would restore the unity and working of the TFPC to its glory days. “As it worked and functioned in the time of doyens like A V M Saravanan, this council will regain that unity. We will work towards that with the support of everybody. The margin that I have won by means that people have faith in the team behind me,” said Thanu, who is entering this power corridor of film politics for the fourth time.

Thanu also said that he would work towards making his campaign resolutions come true, from the first month onward. Some of the things that Thanu and company have promised are - establishment of an anti-piracy unit with retired cops, provisions to release Tamil movies on home DVD within a month of its release and also reducing the digital processing rates charged by UFO, QUBE and other companies. “One thing that we are looking forward to is his promise that small films will get enough leeway to release without having to fear big ticket releases,” said a producer at the election site, KN College in Anna Nagar.

The council has been seeing turbulent times since 2013 - when Thanu’s group was defeated by rival producer Keyar. Thanu filed a case in the Madras High Court that the election had been rigged in October 2013, which was eventually struck down. Following this, a no-confidence vote was held in 2014, during which Keyar didn’t secure the necessary votes. This led to another petition in the HC last October, which directed retired justice A K Raja to preside over the election process in a fair manner and “interim manage the running of the TFPC.”

Kollyinsider wishes Thanu for winning the election in a commendable way.
