Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam was laid to rest with complete police honours at his farmhouse in Tamil Nadu’s Thamaraipakkam village on Saturday.

Balasubrahmanyam's mortal remains were taken to his Red Hills Farmhouse on Friday evening where his fans and well-wishers gathered in large numbers to pay their last respects.

The farm house at Tamaraipakkam in nearby Tiruvallur district teemed with his fans, well-wishers and celebrities for the funeral and about 500 police personnel were deployed to regulate crowd.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami announced that the singer who is a recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan will be laid to rest with full police honours.

The singer's son S P Charan performed the funeral rites amid Vedic chants by priests. Around 12.30 pm, SPB’s body was lowered into the pit amid chants of ‘Hara Hara Mahadeva’. Around two dozen armed reserve policemen from the Tamil Nadu police, dressed in the ceremonial attire, stood a few feet away from SPB’s body and paid their respects by giving a 24-gun salute.

His last rites took place in the presence of veteran director Bharathiraja, singer Mano and his family members. Though it is customary for Hindus to cremate their dead, SPB was buried in a small portion of land inside his farmhouse compound following their family tradition.

Demise of legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam will not just pass as another celebrity death. People from all walks of life fell in love and overcame hurdles with his songs gracing the background. Many even considered him a family member. Heartbroken, people took to social media to express their grief.

The 74-year-old is a household name across States and inspired a generation of playback singers. Hashtags like #SPBalasubramaniam, #RIPLegend and #RIPSPB trended on Twitter for most part of the day with condolences pouring in.

On August 5, SPB had tested positive for COVID-9 with mild symptoms. However, on August 13 when his health deteriorated he was hospitalized and put on a ventilator. While the singer was showing signs of improvement on Thursday evening his health turned for the worse.

On Friday, SPB's son S.P Charan had confirmed that SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away at 1.04 pm. The singer's body was taken to his residence from the hospital and the public were allowed to pay their respects. Several people gathered outside the singer's house on Friday evening to have a last glimpse.
