With the mercury level rising, Kollywood is all set to brave the heat and make people come out of their homes this summer with a string of releases. This year, several movies have been deferred by a few weeks due to IPL and exams, and industry bigwigs are only hoping that this delay will prove to be the right decision.
Many films are awaiting release. This year, top actors Vijay, Suriya, Vikram, Jayam Ravi and Karthi have major summer releases.
The summer bonanza will kickstart this Friday with Karthi-Tamannaah's much-awaited Tamil urban story Paiyya (also spelt Paiya), directed by Lingusamy. The film is said to be a racy road movie with all the essential commercial ingredients; Yuvan’s music is already topping the charts. The Telugu version Aawara will release two weeks later in Andhra Pradesh.
This will be followed by director Simbhudevan’s Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam (Super Cowboy in Telugu). This much-expected cowboy flick will grace theatres on April 9. Produced by Kalapathi S. Aghoram under the AGS Entertainment banner, the film has noted choreographer-actor-turned-director Lawrence Raghavendra in the lead role. Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam is an 18th century subject with much comedy and adventure. Padmapriya and Lakshmi Rai are the heroines. Also in the cast are Saikumar, Sandya, Nasser, Manorama, Senthil, Mouli, Delhi Ganesh and Ramesh Khanna.
Next will be the racy Maanja Velu, which will hit screens on April 14. After tasting success in Malai Malai, the Arun Vijay-Venkatesh duo is back with Maanja Velu, also an action movie. 'Maanja' is the gluey mix of glass powder and other stuff rubbed on the string of a kite. It is used to cut the strings of rival kites, but if handled wrongly, it can cut you. This forms the basic plot. Prabhu, Karthik, Ganja Karuppu, Santhanam and others form the supporting cast. Mani Sharma has scored the music for the film.
On the same day, another masala film Guru Sishayan, directed by Sakthi Chidambaram and featuring Sathyaraj, Sundar C. and Hemamalini, is due for release.
Then come the biggies: Ilaiyathalapathy Vijay’s 50th film Sura directed by S.P. Rajkumar. This is the first time Vijay and Tamannaah come together in lead roles. Produced by Sangili Murugan, Sura is Ilayathalapathi Vijay's 50th film. Vijay will play the role of a fisherman in Sura which has music by Tollywood sensation Mani Sharma.
Suriya’s silver jubilee film Singam is also scheduled to release this summer. Anushka is Suriya's heroine for the first time. Suriya and director Hari are naturally hoping for a hat trick after Aaru and Vel. Suriya dons the role of a police officer after Khaka Khaka and Hari directs this police story after Saamy.
June releases include the musical entertainer Thillalangadi, which stars Jayam Ravi, Tamannaah and Shaam, directed by M. Raja and with music by Yuvanshankar Raja. And the summer releases will end with a bang! The much-awaited Mani Ratnam’s bilingual Raavana in Tamil and Raavan in Hindi. Raavan/ Raavana, said to be the modern adaptation of the epic Ramayana, revolves around Ravana, the ruler of Lanka, who kidnapped Sita. The story culminates with Sita taking the side of Ravana instead of Rama, who suspects her chastity after having spent so much time in Ravana’s custody. Vikram plays the villain. Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are the lead pair in Hindi, while Vikram will play the lead opposite Aishwarya in Tamil. Music is by Oscar winning A.R. Rahman.
Looks like a great summer ahead!
