Rahman wins Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration

After winning the prestigious Oscars come yet another honour for musical genius A.R. Rahman. The musician, along with the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, Chhattisgarh, has jointly won the 25th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration (2009) for their services in promoting and preserving national integration.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi will present the award on October 31, death anniversary of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The award consists of a citation and cash of Rs. 2.5 lakh.

The award was instituted by the Congress in 1985 to recognize distinguished persons for outstanding contributions to the cause of national integration. The earlier recipients of the award include Aruna Asaf Ali, Shankar Dayal Sharma, Javed Akhtar and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
