Balachander gets Dadasaheb Phalke award

On Friday, renowned producer, director and screenwriter K. Balachander was chosen for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2010 for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema.
The award, given on the recommendations of a committee of eminent persons, consists of a Swarn Kamal, a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakhs and a shawl.
Announced by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, the award will be presented by President Pratibha Patil at the National Film Awards later this year. The dates are yet to be announced.
Balachander, 81, has directed and produced more than 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada in his 45-year-long career.
Known for his distinct film making style, he was conferred the Padma Shri in 1987 and was honoured with the title ‘Kalaimamani’ by the Tamil Nadu Government in 1973. He has also won the Golden Nandi award and Silver Nandi awards from the Andhra Pradesh government and has also won numerous Filmfare Best Director awards. salutes this stalwart and congratulates him for this latest honour.
