Come June, July and August, the countdown has started for the release of this year's biggies in Tamil. The next 100 days from June 14...
Remember there has not been any big hero (a star who features in top 10 at the box-office) releases during 2012 summer peak season (April 1 to May 31). Many big star studded movies like Billa 2, Saguni, Maatran and Viswaroopam were initially planned as early summer releases, but due to various factors they got delayed.
The biggest hit of the season is Rajesh directed Oru Kal Oru Kannadi, the launch pad of Udhayanidhi Stalin. Another summer hit Sundar C's Kalakalappu featured the relatively unknown Vimal and Shiva in lead roles.
Ajith's Chakri Toleti directed Billa 2 will open the Kollywood door to the biggies on June 15. It will be followed two weeks later by Karthi's Saguni on June 29. Kamal Haasan's eagerly awaited Viswaroopam is tentatively slotted for a July 13 release. Suriya's KV Anand directed big budget Maatran will be the next big release on August 15, Independence Day weekend.
Two weeks later on August 31, the first super hero film in Tamil Jiiva's Mugamoodi is slated for release. As of now Vijay's Thuppaki is likely to release on September 14 for the big Vinayaka Chathurthi weekend. Finally on September28 UTV is trying to release their ambitious Vikram's Thandavam.
Abirami Ramanathan leading distributor and exhibitor said: "Yes, finally the biggies will arrive from June middle to September end, a period of a little over 100 days and it is going to be boom time in the industry. I personally believe it is a blessing in disguise that during the summer months of April-May we did not have any biggies and they are coming in traditionally a weak period June-July when schools reopen. A big star movie will bring the audiences to the theatre irrespective of other things."
Nearly Rs 250 Crores will be riding on these films. Their success is very crucial to Kollywood, as Tamil cinema is emerging as the second biggest grossers in the overseas market after Bollywood films. All big star movies are being sold at US $ 1 million plus for overseas as the Indian Rupee continues to plunge.
None of the producers of the biggies were willing to be quoted regarding thebudget or the release date of their film. However G Dhananjayan of UTV said: "Mugamoodi will be releasing in August. Our planned release date is 31st August for Mugamoodi and Thaandavam in the last week of September. But, both will release before Sept 30 is confirmed."
What about Tamil Film Producer Council's (TFPC) much talked about decision to release biggies only during festival/national holidays? Nobody is willing to be quoted on it but in private they agree that it is not possible as too many big films with crores riding on them are getting ready for release around the same time.
A spokesperson for a leading multiplex concluded saying: "The release dates should be firmed up now and there should be at least two weeks gap between two big films so that every film gets its due at the box office. I hope the producers do proper marketing and promotions which are essential for the success of a film irrespective of its star cast."
So folks get ready for entertainment extravaganza to unfold in the next 100plus days. It is going to be raining blockbusters as almost all top heroes will have a release. Everybody is unanimous that come rain or sunshine they will try to keep to the promised dates and to avoid any clashes.
Please note superstar Rajinikanth has already booked the Diwali date (November 13) for a solo release for his Kochadaiyaan during the festival of lights!
These summer is expected to be very sensational!! i'm looking forward for these films!
