Brother-Sister Sentiment In Kollywood Movies

India is celebrating Raksha Bandhan festival on August 20. It is one of the most celebrated festivals of the country, predominantly in Northern part of India. Raksha Bandhan signifies the bond of protection from a brother to sister.
In the era of globalisation, Raksha Bandhan has been spread to South India also. It is marked by sister tying Rakhi to brother’s hand. This symbolises the brother and sister relationship to stay long.

Indian cinema which has all the themes of movies, has not forgotten to include the brother and sister sentiment. Languages like Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada has made many movies on this theme. Tamil cinema industry is not excluded – Superstars from MG Ramachandra to Vijay have done the movies, which depicts the brother and sister sentiment.

When we look into classical age of Tamil cinema, Shivajai Ganesan starrer Pasamalar can be considered as the first movie, which carried the theme of brother and sister sentiment in Tamil cinema. The song ‘Malargalai pol thangai urangukia’ from the movie became the all time best songs in Tamil film industry which narrates the brother and sister relationship.

‘Annana vittu oru kalayanama’ song, from the movie Vathiyar Veetu Pillai is also remembered, when we talk about brotherhood.
