Too many movie releases leading to chaos in industry but TV channels gain
There are far too many films releasing every week in Tamil and Malayalam, leading to total chaos in the market.
The audiences are losing interest in watching new releases. First and foremost there is a dumping down of sub- standard content and marketing is poor. The idea seems to be to just release a film and move on after selling the television rights.
In the last one year a lot of new satellite channels have started telecasting and they find it far cheaper to buy feature films than making their own software. This has created a market for satellite television rights, for films which have a theatrical release. So producers are actually looking for a one show release in limited screens.
Nearly 150 Tamil films have released in the last 330 days, averaging almost a release every two days. Another 20 films are waiting in the queue for release in December.
This Friday (Nov 29) new Tamil releases are Appavin Kalyanam, Ennachu, Jannal Oram, Naveena Saraswati Sabadam and Vidiyum Munn.
